How might design improve it? A design research-focused project that leveraged interview and survey responses of 118 queer people assigned female at birth, Conceiving Queer sought to improve access to queer-specific resources and information about trying to conceive. Final works reflected the myriad challenges of a queer trying-to-conceive experience and highlighted the invisibility of this particular narrative in our hetero-dominant culture. Through design system intervention—especially as we start to see this design at scale—couples will be able to more easily navigate the conception journey from initial decision making to choosing a donor to insemination. UAM supports local makers who are focused on sustainable practice. Most of the event vendors were women and people of color. I supported event logistics and secured event sponsorships for both the Oakland and Hayes Valley events. With very limited staff and only 3 months to plan and execute the event for 200 guests, I took on production of all aspects. This included event sponsorship, ticket sales, sound and lighting, food and drink, talent coordination, decor, warehouse design, communications, set up, staffing and post-event admin. Our participants numbered in the tens of thousands, and as a member and then leader of our national fundraising effort for 4 years, I was responsible for millions of dollars each campaign. This required strong leadership, effective communication and relationship building as well as management of multi-functional event teams. I now had the unofficial middle name my parents didn’t want. And my little sister, who is a girl, was born just a few years later. While the ceremony didn’t exactly work, I’m named after a woman so set on getting things done that she'd show up in your dreams if thats what she needed to do to make shit happen.&nbsp; I like to think that this is a characteristic I inherited.&nbsp; I’ve always been drawn to the intersection of humanity and systems. My graduate work at PNCA (the Masters is in Design Systems) focused on design's ability to intervene in and help dismantle systems of oppression.
